Committee on Global Engagement Domestic Subcommittee

Over 27.5 million people (about the population of Texas) in the United States do not have healthcare insurance and access to affordable surgical care. The Domestic Subcommittee strives to bridge this gap by promoting domestic surgical volunteerism and partnering with national organizations to support their outreach efforts.

This subcommittee aims to:

  • Establish connections with US organizations involved in surgical volunteerism.
  • Develop infrastructure to support ACS Fellows in providing free or discounted surgical care to underserved populations.
  • Support ACS Fellows in educational volunteerism to promote training for underserved healthcare and surgical students.
  • Create a toolkit to assist ACS Fellows in developing domestic surgical programs, thereby improving surgical care across the United States.

Activities

The Domestic Subcommittee is currently partnering with some impactful organizations. These include the Health Career Collaborative, HMARIA, Inc., and several free or discounted surgical clinics, which are making a significant difference in domestic surgical volunteerism. The subcommittee also works with medical schools in Puerto Rico, coordinating cyber-lecture and cyber-mentoring opportunities with ACS faculty for the students.
