The STN ATPM course will be designed by TPMs for TPMs who seek advanced training and in-depth knowledge related to the Six Performance Domains of Trauma Program Management as outlined in the STN TPM Role Delineation Study, which is included as a supporting appendix to the STN Position Statement on Qualifications and Competencies for the Trauma Program Manager.

The Six Performance Domains of Trauma Program Management include the following:

  • Continuum of Trauma Care
  • Professional Issues
  • Human Resources
  • Management of Physical Resources, Financial Resources, and Medical Professionals

Advanced Operations Management for Trauma Centers

The Advanced Operations Management for Trauma Centers course, developed by Jeffrey Young, MD, will be a unique experience. Unlike other offerings, we will go beyond the basic structure and criteria for trauma center verification and dive deeply into the common and critical problems that a trauma medical director or trauma program manager will face in trying to provide optimal care for injured patients. This will include in-depth discussions of performance improvement in all aspects of trauma care delivery ranging from relationships with EMS to discharge and rehabilitation. Dr. Young’s experience administering a trauma center for 29 years and his overwhelming experience as a trauma center site reviewer for the American College of Surgeons gives him insight into his own processes and best practices he has seen across the country. The course will endeavor to be as interactive as possible so that students can share their own experiences and solicit advice on their most vexing problems. 

AIS2015 Course

The two-day AIS2015 course provides a brief history of injury scaling methods, understanding the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) uses, and coding rules and guidelines. The course will also explore the hands-on practice of identifying injuries and coding them with the most appropriate AIS code, leading to the overall Injury Severity Score (ISS) for the patient.

The course is highly recommended for trauma medical directors, trauma program managers/coordinators, and administrators.

The STN TOPIC course is taught to all members of the trauma system team who participate in the ongoing assessment, evaluation, and improvement of trauma care. The Society of Trauma Nurses has developed the Trauma Outcomes and Performance Improvement Course in response to the need for education and better understanding of the Performance Improvement process in trauma care. TOPIC focuses on the ongoing assessment of the continuum of trauma care with a structured review of process and discussions of strategies to monitor trauma patient outcomes.
