The mission of the Cancer Research Program is to integrate with the ACS Cancer Programs and lead research to improve the care of the person with cancer, in particular the surgical cancer patient. The vision of the CRP is to improve patient outcomes through data analysis, validation, and implementation of standards and research.

The Cancer Research Program maintains three committees: the Standards Investigation and Validation Committee, the Cancer Data Modeling Committee, and the Implementation Research Committee.

Many of the Cancer Programs (CoC, NAPBC, NAPRC, and CSSP) develop evidence-based accreditation standards with the goal of improving patient care. This committee validates the impact of standards and accreditation, conducts research to help establish new standards, and demonstrates the value of adherence to standards. This is achieved through many mechanisms, including partnership with other ACS Cancer Programs.

Current Standards Investigation and Validation Committee Members

The Cancer Data Modeling Committee brings a team of modeling experts together to develop new approaches to explore and investigate the incorporation of diverse types of data (e.g., social determinants of health and evolving biologic marker data) and use of big data to drive the development of new clinical tools. The overarching goals of the committee include developing new clinical tools to aid patients with cancer and physicians treating cancer and constructing annual reports that identify trends in cancer care and outcomes across multiple disease sites.

Current Cancer Data Modeling Committee Members

The ACS Cancer Programs set standards, including operative and accreditation standards. Implementation of these standards is critical to the mission of the ACS Cancer Programs. This committee studies the implementation of accreditation standards, including operative standards, and quality measures to understand barriers and facilitators to implementation, develop and test implementation strategies, and evaluate implementation outcomes such as costs and sustainability.
