Douglas Tyler, MD, MSHCT, is currently a Professor of Surgery at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He is the Associate Chair of Community Operations and Strategy as well as the Director of Hillsborough Services for the Department of Surgery. Dr Tyler was previously the John Woods Harris Distinguished Chair in Surgery at University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) and the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at UTMB for 10 years starting in 2014. Dr Tyler also held an Adjunct Professor appointment at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in the Department of Surgical Oncology during this time period. Dr. Tyler’s previous leadership positions included Division Chief of Surgical Oncology and Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Duke University Medical Center; Chief of the Surgical Services at the Durham VA Medical Center; and within the Duke Cancer Institute he was both Head of the Melanoma program and Associate Director of the Duke Cancer Institute in charge of Strategic Planning. Dr. Tyler’s clinical practice and research interests focuses on GI cancers and melanoma. He has published over 290 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 80 book chapters and is currently the Editor in Chief of the 22nd edition of the Sabiston Textbook of Surgery. Dr. Tyler was inducted into the American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators in 2019. He earned a Masters in Health Care Transformation (MSHCT) at the University of Texas Dell School of Medicine and the McCombs School of Business in 2020. Dr. Tyler completed a 6 year term as a Director on the American Board of Surgery (ABS) in 2016 continuing on as an ABS Senior Director for examinations until 2024. He was also Chairman of the Complex General Surgical Oncology Board, a component Board of the ABS, from 2014-2016. Dr. Tyler is a past President of the Society of Surgical Oncology and the Society of Surgical Chairs. He is currently a Governor of the American College of Surgeons.
