A native of Detroit, he attended Wayne State University (WSU) as a Merit Scholar, graduated with high distinction (2 letters in football) & matriculated to the WSU School of Medicine. He completed General Surgery Residency at St. John Hospital (Detroit) & Colorectal Surgery (CRS) Residency at St. Vincent Health Center (Erie, PA). He began his career in New York City at SUNY-Downstate (Brooklyn), involved in preoperative transrectal U/S to stage rectal cancer as a prelude to preoperative (neoadjuvant) therapy, part of a multidisciplinary approach to improve rectal cancer outcomes. He brought this innovation to the Midwest (Kansas City) & published results matching tertiary referral centers and a national trial- ACOSOG Z6051 (Am J Surg 2019; 217(3):430-434). He was recruited back to academia to Ohio State University (OSU) to create a CRS Residency & act as Program Director. He originated CRS services at MD Anderson-affiliated cancer centers in the South (Phoenix, New Orleans), before returning to Michigan at Central Michigan University. He served on the Editorial Board of the ASCRS' official journal, "Diseases of the Colon & Rectum" (DCR) for 20 years: 1st recipient of the ASCRS "Victor Fazio Award for Editorial Excellence" in 2007 (2nd in 2022), named DCR "Star Reviewer" 8 years running (2017-2024), prior Selected Abstracts section editor (2007-2015) & current "Historical Content" section editor. He is also on the Editorial Boards: "Techniques in Coloproctology" & "The Journal of Gastrointestinal Disease". He received the ASCRS "Unsung Hero" award (2020), served a term on the ASCRS Executive Council & past Chair of the Young Surgeons Committee of both ASCRS & ACS. He is past president of: ACS Kansas Chapter, the Ohio Valley Society of CRS, Midwest Surgical Association (MSA) & Southwest Society of CRS. He is past MSA representative to the ACS Board of Governors (BOG) & Chair BOG Surgical Care Delivery Workgroup. He has been an Examiner for the ABCRS for 20 years.
