Biography

A native Seattleite, I have had a rewarding 30+ year career in the University of Washington Department of Surgery, based primarily at the Puget Sound VA Medical Center. Now a Professor of Surgery, I serve as Chief of General Surgery and the Director of Surgical Critical Care. Unlike most general surgeons, my practice remains broad, including a spectrum of Surgical Oncology, Endocrine and General Surgery. While I had a successful basic science laboratory for several years, my academic focus now is education. I contributed to SESAP for over 25 years and now direct the new Advanced SESAP program. I completed a 6 year term on the ACGME during its review of the impact of surgical work hours regulation on training. I have been honored to participate in many ACS activities (WA chapter, Board of Governors) and have recently been elected to the ACS Master Educators Academy. On the personal side, I am an active gardener and avid reader with a passion for Pilates fitness.
