Members of the BRC II Steering Committee and Subcommittee Chairs met at ACS Headquarters in November 2023.

The second Blue Ribbon Committee on Surgical Education (BRC II) announced its recommendations for optimizing the future of surgical education at the April American Surgical Association (ASA) Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.

A May Bulletin feature article describes the work of ACS Regent Steven C. Stain, MD, FACS, ACS Immediate Past-President E. Christopher Ellison, MD, FACS, and other surgical education experts to enumerate the many changes recommended by the BRC II nearly 20 years after the first committee released recommendations.

The recommendations include, among others, meeting the demographic needs of populations served with a strong surgical workforce; reforming medical student education to support those interested in surgery and develop leadership skills, ethics, and more; and reforming surgical resident education to include national guidelines to support a comprehensive approach to competency-based education.
