The ACS offers an Entering Resident Readiness Assessment (ERRA) program to help ensure PGY-1s have successful careers in surgery.
ERRA is a psychometrically rigorous case-based instrument that focuses on clinical decision-making and is customized for residents and program directors. The assessment provides valuable insights into a resident’s strengths, weaknesses, and preparedness to assume new responsibilities by focusing on 20 clinical topics that incoming surgical residents are likely to encounter. Residents respond to 40 short clinical cases, each followed by questions that specifically assess key clinical decisions.
Score reports include templates for the development of individualized learning plans with suggested resources.
Enrollment is underway now through May 30 for the 2025 proctored assessment. Administration occurs June 9–July 3. The cost is $150 per resident, and program directors are welcome to complete the assessment themselves free of charge to become more familiar with the content.
