Scudder Oration on Trauma | Major Hepatic Injury: We Can Do Better
Most blunt liver injuries can be managed nonoperatively. However, operative mortality for major liver injuries (grade IV, V) which require laparotomy for hemorrhage control remains high. In this lecture, Andrew B. Peitzman, MD, FACS, discusses the factors leading to these outcomes and details approaches and techniques which can improve survival.
The Ever-Shifting Paradigm in the Treatment of Diverticulitis
The management of diverticulitis continues to evolve. In this session, expert panelists discuss the shift in the treatment paradigm of diverticulitis and review the evidence behind the new guidelines for the treatment of this prevalent disease. Topics including elective colectomy, management of immunocompromised patients, and gut flora are explored.
Bile Duct Injury: What We Should Know and Do
Associated with high morbidity and mortality, correct management of a bile duct injury will determine the evolution of the patient. Laparoscopic gallbladder surgery is widely used, being performed in rural hospital centers as well as in tertiary care centers. However, the management of biliary lesions can determine the transfer of the patient to a higher-level center. This session provides the tools for the prevention, identification, and management of this pathology.
