Membership

Categories of Membership

Active Membership

Active Members shall be Fellows, Associate Fellows, Residents, and Medical Students of the College who are currently serving on active duty in a branch of the United States Uniformed Medical Service; currently active or inactive Armed Forces Reserve or National Guard; or are retired or discharged under honorable conditions from a United States Uniformed Medical Service after at least one year of service. Active members may hold elected office, have voting rights, and will pay annual dues to remain in good standing. After verification of good standing with the American College of Surgeons and verification of military service, eligible members will automatically become Active members upon application.

Affiliate Membership

Affiliate Members shall be Members of the College who do not otherwise meet the requirements for Active membership in the Society. After verifying good standing with the ACS, eligible members will automatically become Affiliate members upon application. Affiliates will pay annual dues to remain in good standing. Affiliate members do not have voting rights and may not hold elected office.

Distinguished Membership

Distinguished Members are nominated by an Active Member and approved by a majority of the Executive Council. Distinguished Members meet the same requirements and have the same privileges as Active Members. Distinguished Members have voting rights and are physicians or scientists who have gained professional prominence by his/her contribution to the advancement of military surgery in general or the Excelsior Society in particular. Annual dues are waived for Distinguished Members.

Honorary Membership

Honorary Members are nominated by an Active Member and approved by a majority of the Executive Council. Honorary Members do NOT vote or hold office unless duly appointed per Article IX, Section 1. Honorary Members are NOT eligible for Active Membership. Honorary Members are physicians or scientists who have gained professional prominence by his/her contribution to the advancement of military surgery in general or the Excelsior Society in particular or are a member of the community who has shown particular interest in military surgery and provided support to the Excelsior Society. Annual dues are waived for Honorary Members.
