Dr. Sutherland earned a bachelor of science in microbiology from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, and his medical degree from Louisiana State University Medical Center School of Medicine in New Orleans. Additionally, he has a master of business administration degree from The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business in Columbus.
He completed his residency in general surgery at Keesler USAF Medical Center, Keesler AFB, Mississippi. After residency, Dr. Sutherland completed a general thoracic and vascular surgery fellowship at Keesler USAF Medical Center and the VA Gulf Coast Health Care System in Biloxi, Mississippi.
He served in the Air Force for 10 years, including a deployment to Balad, Iraq, in 2005. His clinical practice has been focused on trauma center and trauma systems development. He has established trauma centers in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Ohio and served in leadership roles on the state and regional trauma systems in each state. He continues his clinical practice at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois.
Dr. Sutherland is the Senior Vice President of the Division of Member Services at the American College of Surgeons, where he is responsible for the membership and many of the ACS leadership groups.
