Dr. Chambers serves as the command surgeon for the US European Command and the medical advisor to Gen. Christopher Cavoli for all medical readiness issues in the European Area of Responsibility.
His prior assignments include command surgeon, US Strategic Command; commander, 380th Expeditionary Medical Group, United Arab Emirates; commander, 11th Surgical Operations Squadron, JB Andrews; director, International Health Specialist Program, Office of the AF/SG, Air Staff; reconstructive and hand surgeon, 59th Medical Wing, San Antonio, Texas.
Prior to surgical training Dr. Chambers served 2 years in the Air Force Special Operations Command as a flight surgeon with the 6th Special Operations Squadron (Foreign Internal Defense), then in the Joint Special Operations Command for an additional 4 years. He deployed in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, Inherent Resolve, and Freedom’s Sentinel.
Dr. Chambers has served on the teaching staff at Uniformed Services University and Harvard and as a consultant in hand surgery to the White House Medical Unit. He has published five books and more than 30 peer-reviewed journal articles. In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he is a fellow of the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa (COSECSA).
He received his MD and master of public health and tropical medicine degrees from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, before training in general surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, plastic and reconstructive Surgery at The University of Alabama Birmingham, and hand surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
