Gen (Ret.) Austin Scott Miller

Gen. Miller is a distinguished American military leader who served as the Commander of NATO's Resolute Support Mission and United States Forces—Afghanistan, from September 2018 to July 2021. He was a career Army officer with more than 40 years of service. He graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point in 1983 and was commissioned as an infantry officer.

Gen. Miller's military career is marked by numerous deployments and key leadership positions. He served in various special operations units, including the 75th Ranger Regiment and the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, he deployed to Somalia as part of Task Force Ranger, where he played a key role in the Battle of Mogadishu, a notorious and intense urban warfare operation. He has also deployed multiple times to Afghanistan and Iraq, earning numerous awards and decorations for his bravery and leadership.

Prior to assuming command in Afghanistan, Gen. Miller served as commander of the Joint Special Operations Command from 2016 to 2018. He also held key staff positions, including serving as the deputy director for special operations and counterterrorism on the Joint Staff.

Gen. Miller's command of the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan was marked by efforts to train and advise the Afghan security forces, as well as to conduct counterterrorism operations against terrorist groups such as the Taliban and ISIS-K. He played a key role in the negotiations with the Taliban, which ultimately led to the signing of the Doha Agreement in February 2020.

After retiring from the Army in July 2021, Gen. Miller has continued to be involved in national security issues, providing expert commentary and analysis on the situation in Afghanistan and other global hotspots. His extensive experience and expertise make him a respected voice on military and foreign policy matters.
