Dr. Stettbacher has been surgeon general of the Swiss Armed Forces since 2009. He is in charge of the military health service, directs the medical sector in the Armed Forces Logistics Organization, and heads the Centre of Competence for Military and Disaster Medicine. Additionally, the surgeon general is responsible for medical support to the Swiss Special Forces professional components and is the instance for appeals on decisions of the Swiss Air Force Medical Institute. Administratively, he is assigned to the head of the Armed Forces Logistics Organization.
He received his medical degree in surgery FMH M from the University of Bern, Switzerland, and is associate professor in Surgery at the University of Applied Sciences in Bern. He was trained in general and cardiothoracic surgery.
From 2019-2022, Dr. Stettbacher served as president of the International Committee for Military Medicine (ICMM) and, since 2024, as honorary chairman of the ICMM. His military assignments have included Chief Medical Office – Joint Staff, staff surgeon of the Swiss Armed Forces Strategic Command, and surgeon general of the Swiss Armed Forces. His foreign assignments have included serving with the OSCE as CMO in Bosnia in 1998, with the Swiss Coy as CMO in Kosovo and Macedonia in 1999, 2000, and 2001, as CMO MNB NATO Exercise Viking in 2001, and with the Swiss Rescue in Bam/Iran in 2003.
