Surgical Ergonomics On-Site Training

The ACS Division of Education and its Surgical Ergonomics Committee are now offering to bring the ACS Surgical Ergonomics Hands-on Clinic to your institution.

The ACS Surgical Ergonomics On-Site Training program aims to provide participants with surgical ergonomics-related lectures and a hands-on ergonomic training experience for participants. The on-site training program will begin with a 3 to 4-hour didactic session where surgical ergonomics subject matter experts will describe the risks associated with bad ergonomics in the operating room, evidence-based ergonomic interventions, and discuss overcoming the cultural barriers required to implement change. Participants will then be invited to join one of several 1-hour small group hands-on sessions at four separate stations: laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery, open surgery, and exercise. Each surgical station will feature a simulated environment where ergonomic coaches will guide participants on how to adjust their OR components and postures in alignment with the ACS Surgical Ergonomics Recommendations. At the exercise station, participants will learn various stretching and strengthening exercises that can be implemented within and outside of the OR to promote musculoskeletal wellness. Over the course of the hour, participants will be able to attend the surgical ergonomics stations relevant to their surgical practice.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this on-site training, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the benefits of implementing ergonomic interventions into their surgical practice.
  • Demonstrate ergonomic interventions applicable to robotic, laparoscopic, and open surgery, aligned with the ACS Surgical Ergonomic Recommendations.
  • Implement stretching and stabilizing exercise routines within and outside the operating room to promote musculoskeletal wellness.

Logistics

The ACS will provide the following support to participating organizations:

  • Surgical ergonomics training designed and delivered by surgical ergonomics subject matter experts.
  • Travel support and honoraria for speakers.
  • A list detailing the equipment and supplies required for the training.

Participating organizations will be responsible for:

  • Providing an appropriate space and required equipment for the training.
  • Onsite technical assistance for all equipment and supplies.
  • Coordinating the scheduling of learners to attend the training.
  • CME accreditation of the training, if desired. The ACS will provide supporting documentation to the organization to comply with accreditation requirements.
