The ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators Grand Rounds Series is pleased to present this virtual panel discussion with Dr. Adnan Alseidi, Dr. Jennifer Choi, and Dr. Dimitrios Stefanidis, moderated by Dr. Mohsen Shabahang, with welcoming remarks by Dr. Ajit K. Sachdeva. The purpose of this panel is to discuss the topic of Leadership Roles in Surgical Education.

Adnan Alseidi, MD, EdM, is the associate dean for assessment, improvement, and accreditation and a professor of clinical surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Alseidi holds national and international positions, including being a past president of the Association of Surgical Education, past president of the fellowship council, and a board member of the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. He is also a counselor on the American Board of Surgery and has over 270 peer-reviewed publications.
Clinically, Dr. Alseidi has extensive experience with minimally invasive and open hepatobiliary, pancreatic, and endocrine surgeries. Additionally, he is interested in expanding surgical therapies for patients with locally advanced pancreas cancer and splenic preservation techniques.
A UC, Santa Barbara, and Pennsylvania State University Medical School graduate, Dr. Alseidi completed his general surgery residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Following graduation from residency, he served as a surgeon in the US Navy and a co-director of the surgery department at the US Naval Hospital in Okinawa, Japan. Dr. Alseidi completed an HPB and advanced GI fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, and earned a master's degree in surgical education at Southern Illinois University/University of Illinois-UC.
Jennifer N. Choi, MD, FACS, is the senior Associate dean for graduate medical education and the designated institutional official (DIO) for Indiana University School of Medicine. She is a professor of clinical surgery, whose research focuses on surgical education and bariatric surgery. She has co-authored more than 30 peer-reviewed publications in her field. Dr. Choi’s clinical practice includes bariatric, foregut, and hernia surgery. Dr. Choi is a graduate of Taylor University with a BA in chemistry and an MD from Indiana University School of Medicine. She completed residency training at Indiana University School of Medicine and fellowship training in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at IU Health North Hospital. Dr. Choi led the general surgery residency program from 2014-2022. In 2022, she was appointed associate dean for graduate medical education, where she served until being named senior associate dean for graduate medical education in 2024. Dr. Choi is currently serving as the president of the Association of Program Directors in Surgery.
Dr. Stefanidis is President Elect of the Indiana Chapter of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), president of the Indiana chapter of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), immediate past president of the Association for Surgical Education, and has led several national committees and served on the board of the Society for Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons SAGES. He is founding editor-in-chief for global surgical education of the Journal of the Association for Surgical Education, a member of the ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators, and a fellow of the Academy of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. Dr. Stefanidis has a passion for improving teaching methods to optimize skill acquisition in surgery and has published over 250 peer-reviewed papers in prestigious surgical journals, given over 300 scientific presentations at a national/international stage, received more than 20 research awards including the 2021 researcher of the year award by the Society for Simulation in healthcare, and obtained over $4 million dollars in funding.
The session will be moderated by Mohsen Shabahang, MD, PhD, FACS, MAMSE, Chair of the Subcommittee on Novel Teaching and Assessment Methods and Educational Resources for the ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators. Dr. Shabahang is the VP/CMO of the Wellspan Surgery Service Line, York, PA. Dr. Shabahang joined Wellspan in summer 2021.
Ajit K. Sachdeva, MD, FACS, FRCSC, FSACME, MAMSE, will deliver opening remarks. Dr. Sachdeva is the founding director of the division of education at the American College of Surgeons. He established this new division, which is responsible for the development and implementation of innovative educational programs for surgeons, surgery residents, medical students and members of surgical teams. Under Dr. Sachdeva’s leadership, several major education and training initiatives have been launched. These include programs to promote expertise and excellence in surgery; cutting-edge simulation-based programs; Program for Accreditation of Education Institutes (simulation centers); ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators; a range of continuous professional development programs; and an innovative Patient Education Program. Dr. Sachdeva also serves as adjunct professor of surgery at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University.
Dr. Sachdeva was awarded the Distinguished Educator Award (a lifetime achievement award) by the Association for Surgical Education, and the Award for Outstanding Contributions to Healthcare Simulation from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. He has also received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Blockley-Osler Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching, the Board of Trustees’ Award for Teaching Excellence, and Golden Apple Awards for teaching excellence. Dr. Sachdeva has served on the boards of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and Accreditation Council for Graduation Medical Education (ACGME). Dr. Sachdeva has served as president of the Association for Surgical Education, president of the American Association for Cancer Education, president of the Alliance for Clinical Education, president of the Council of Medical Specialty Societies, and president of the Society for Academic Continuing Medical Education.
