Recognizing the critical role of the patient in their recovery, the ACS is committed to providing engaging and effective patient education programs
The education that patients receive before surgery helps to manage expectations and results in significant positive effects on surgery outcomes and quality of life. The ACS brochures support effective communication about the procedure, risks and benefits, and home care following discharge.
The skill training programs explain, demonstrate, and provide directed learning experiences and practice opportunities. Given in advance of surgery, they afford patients/caregivers the opportunity of repetitive practice, and the confidence to actively participate in their care and safely continue their recovery following discharge.
See Home SkillsCommunicating and setting expectations with patients about the best way to manage their post-operative pain has successfully decreased long-term opioid use, misuse, and diversion of opioids into the community.
