The American College of Surgeons encourages members to actively contribute to the House of Surgery through participation in one of its committees.

Who Can Volunteer?

Membership with ACS committees is an inclusive opportunity open to members in good standing. ACS committees and their work advance the College’s mission To Heal All With Skill and Trust and provide meaningful professional development and networking opportunities for members. Please note that the Resident and Associate Society and Young Fellow Association have liaison opportunities for residents and early-career surgeons to serve on ACS committees. What Are the Requirements to Volunteer?

Applicants should have a desire to advance the ACS’ mission To Heal All With Skill and Trust and an express desire to serve with a special interest in the committee’s area of focus. Applicants should have the ability to meet the time and activity commitments listed below by each committee.

Each committee has specific needs and requirements, which are listed below. Please be mindful of these requirements before applying for the opportunity.

What Can I Expect During the Process?

Applications will be accepted through July 15, 2025. The committees will review applications from July through October. Appointments will be announced in late October/early November, shortly after the conclusion of the ACS Clinical Congress. Please carefully read the application requirements for each committee and submit your application through their platform. You will receive communications from the staff liaison throughout this process.

2025 Committee Engagement Opportunities

ACS Foundation

Number of Committee vacancies: 3

The Committee is accepting applications from the following member categories:

  • Fellows
What are the practice backgrounds, areas of expertise, and skills needed for this Committee?

Knowledge of fundraising, experience soliciting philanthropic gifts, passion for the ACS mission, service on a philanthropic board

What are the meeting commitments?

The committee meets virtually three times annually.

What is the appointment term?

Three two-year terms.

What are the expectations of members?
  • Meeting participation
  • Give or get $5,000 annually to the Foundation

Past experience and/or connections with the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa (COSECSA) and/or the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) is desirable. Experience working with surgical learners outside the United States and in a low-resource setting is required.

The committee meets virtually every other month.

What are the meeting commitments?
  • The Committee meets virtually approximately four times a year.
  • The Committee does not meet virtually as a committee of the whole; however, the members serve as a committee that reviews submitted original scientific research to the Annual Surgical Simulation Summit.
What is the appointment term?

Three years with a potential for a second three-year term.

When does the term begin?

 October 2025

What are the expectations of members?
  • Be an active Fellow, Associate Fellow, Affiliate member of the ACS in good standing. Or a PhD Educator involved in surgical-based simulation education and training offered at an AEI.
  • Actively participate in the committee’s activities and initiatives for the Annual Surgical Simulation Summit, specifically reviewing and grading submitted abstracts for consideration as a podium or poster presentations.
  • Planning educational content for the Annual Surgical Simulation Summit, which includes panel sessions, workshops, and other educational networking activities for attendees to participate in.
  • Complete assignments by stated deadlines set forth by the Program Committee Chairs and AEI Program staff.
  • Serve as a discussant, facilitator, moderator when needed to support the Annual Surgical Simulation Summit.
  • Have a background in the creation, evaluation, or teaching of simulation-based education and/or a background in reviewing scientific abstracts.

  • Meet the deadlines set by the Committee and complete assigned Subcommittee/Workgroup for activities and initiatives.
  • Have a background in simulation-based education and training.
  • Hold or held one of the following roles at an AEI: Education Institute Director, Surgical Director, or Administrative Director.

  • Attend scheduled virtual committee meetings.
  • Actively participate in the committee’s activities and initiatives at the Annual Surgical Simulation Summit, such as planning and serving as faculty for committee-sponsored workshops and other managerial, operational, research, and/or educational-focused activities.

    • Confirm moderators for Scientific Forum sessions at Clinical Congress
  • Participate in the two Committee meetings per year
  • Support Scientific Forum-sponsored programs through attendance and participation, and promote the Scientific Forum to their department and colleagues
  • Recommend topics for Clinical Congress panel sessions and for the Seminal Works in Surgery session
  • Nominate a senior surgeon/researcher (must be FACS) for consideration of the annual dedication of the Scientific Forum. After the dedicatee is selected, the Committee member who nominated them will write an introduction to appear in JACS and introduce them at the Dedication session at Clinical Congress.

Faculty Development Committee

The Committee is accepting applications from the following member categories:

  • Membership is open to surgical educators who have formal training in education, e.g., PhD, EdD, M.Ed., and serve as surgical educators at their institutions. Members may include ACS Fellows, Associate Fellows, Affiliate Members, and Residents who have taken the Residents as Teachers and Leaders course. In addition, membership is open to educators and/or researchers who specialize in faculty development in healthcare.
