Become Involved with ACS Committees

Membership with ACS committees is an inclusive opportunity open to members in good standing. ACS committees and their work advance the College’s mission To Heal All With Skill and Trust and provide meaningful professional development and networking opportunities for members. Please note that the Resident and Associate Society and Young Fellow Association have liaison opportunities for residents and early-career surgeons to serve on ACS committees. Information on the liaison process is here for the RAS and here for the YFA.  

Applicants should have a desire to advance the ACS’ mission To Heal All With Skill and Trust and an express desire to serve with a special interest in the committee’s area of focus. Applicants should have the ability to meet the time and activity commitments listed below by each committee.

Each committee has specific needs and requirements, which are listed below. Please be mindful of these requirements before applying for the opportunity.

Applications will be accepted through July 15, 2025. The committees will review applications from July through October. Appointments will be announced in late October/early November, shortly after the conclusion of the ACS Clinical Congress. Please carefully read the application requirements for each committee and submit your application through their platform. You will receive communications from the staff liaison throughout this process.

Knowledge of fundraising, experience soliciting philanthropic gifts, passion for the ACS mission, service on a philanthropic board

The committee meets virtually three times annually.

Must work at an Accredited Education Institute (AEI) and have a role within their surgical simulation center as it relates to simulation-based education, training, or research in the field.

• The Committee does not meet virtually as a committee of the whole; however, the members serve as a committee that reviews submitted original scientific research to the Annual Surgical Simulation Summit.

• Be an active Fellow, Associate Fellow, Affiliate member of the ACS in good standing. Or a PhD Educator involved in surgical-based simulation education and training offered at an AEI.
• Actively participate in the committee’s activities and initiatives for the Annual Surgical Simulation Summit, specifically reviewing and grading submitted abstracts for consideration as a podium or poster presentations.
• Planning educational content for the Annual Surgical Simulation Summit, which includes panel sessions, workshops, and other educational networking activities for attendees to participate in.
• Complete assignments by stated deadlines set forth by the Program Committee Chairs and AEI Program staff.
• Serve as a discussant, facilitator, moderator when needed to support the Annual Surgical Simulation Summit.
• Have a background in the creation, evaluation, or teaching of simulation-based education and/or a background in reviewing scientific abstracts.

ACS-AEI Abstract Review and Program Committee

Must work at an Accredited Education Institute (AEI) and have a role within their surgical simulation center.

• Be an active Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in good standing.
• Attend two assigned virtual committee meetings each year.
• Actively participate in its activities and initiatives beyond attending meetings, such as assuming a role within the Annual Surgical Simulation Summit as a faculty member or abstract reviewer.
• Meet the deadlines set by the Committee and complete assigned Subcommittee/Workgroup for activities and initiatives.
• Have a background in simulation-based education and training.

ACS-AEI Accreditation Review Committee

Must work at an Accredited Education Institute (AEI) and have managerial, operational, research, and/or educational responsibilities within their surgical simulation center.

• Three virtual one-hour meetings
• One in-person meeting for 90 minutes at the Annual Surgical Simulation Summit

• Surgeons from the following disciplines: general surgery, rural surgery, vascular surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, urology, oncology
• Individuals with previous experience contributing to the Clinical Congress program will be preferred

Meets once per month virtually for 1 hour and two in-person meetings during the year.

• Members are expected to contribute to projects pertaining to education and accreditation of allied health professionals; examples include contributing to educational content, position papers, and Clinical Congress presentations.

The new member will be nominated to represent the College as a Commissioner for the Accreditation Review Commission for the Education of the Assistant Physician (ARC-PA). Interested Fellows must read the role expectations outlined in the application and acknowledge they are able and willing to serve in that role.

A surgeon early in their career or a resident surgeon

The committee meets virtually a minimum of three times per year.

The HPAG meets in person three times per year in Washington, DC.

The ACS HPAG is the Regental committee that sets health policy direction for the College. It is expected that the committee members will actively participate in HPAG deliberations.

HPAG committee members have typically served previously on another ACS committee related to health policy before serving on HPAG. These committees include the Legislative Committee, Coding and Reimbursement Committee, PAC Board, and/or Board of Governors’ health policy and advocacy committees.

• The History and Archives Committee encourages applications from those who have an interest in surgical or medical history.

The subcommittee meets at the discretion of the Subcommittee Chair and not more than three times per year.

Members are required to participate in grading submissions for the History of Surgery poster abstracts. The review occurs in March of each year. The review is part of the process for the History of Surgery poster session at Clinical Congress.
