Girma Tefera, MD, FACS

Director, ACS Health Outreach Program for Equity in Global Surgery (ACS H.O.P.E.)

Girma Tefera, MD, FACS, is the Director of the ACS Health Outreach Program for Equity in Global Surgery (ACS H.O.P.E.), which is a volunteer outreach program committed to creating a global learning space by providing surgeons with opportunities to volunteer both domestically and internationally.

Dr. Tefera earned his MD degree from the University of Pisa Faculty of Medicine in Italy. He completed postgraduate training in general surgery at Friedrich Stadt Hospital in Dresden, Germany; a residency in general surgery at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC; and a fellowship in vascular surgery at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics (UWHC) in Madison.

Dr. Tefera continues to practice vascular surgery at UWHC and two other facilities, where he specializes in aortic aneurysm treatment with endovascular stent grafts and angioplasty of the peripheral arteries including the carotid artery, iliac, and superficial femoral artery.

In addition, he is the vice chair of global surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and he conducts clinical research focusing on abdominal aortic aneurysm treatment with endovascular stent grafts, distal peripheral artery bypass surgery, and angioplasty and stents for limb salvage.
