Committee on Global Engagement through ACS H.O.P.E.

The Committee on Global Engagement through the ACS Health Outreach Program for Equity in Global Surgery (ACS H.O.P.E.) is committed to advancing equitable access to surgical care through advocacy, education, and partnership globally and domestically. Through its four subcommittees—Advocacy, Domestic, Education, and International—the Committee champions policies that support global surgery, fosters service and collaboration in underserved US communities, develops inclusive surgical education for learners worldwide, and strengthens sustainable international surgical training initiatives. Together with the ACS H.O.P.E. Medical Director and Program Manager, the Committee on Global Engagement strives to build a connected, informed, and compassionate surgical community that addresses the world's most neglected surgical needs.

Advocacy Subcommittee

• Advocating for U.S. congressional funding for neglected surgical conditions
• Leading Coalition BRIGHT (Building Reciprocal Initiatives for Global Health Training)
• Representing ACS in global health policy forums (e.g., WHO, UNDP, Global Health Council)

Domestic Subcommittee

• Collaborations with Health Career Collaborative, HMARIA, and free/low-cost surgical clinics
• Cyber-mentoring and lectures for medical students in Puerto Rico
• Expanding partnerships with US organizations focused on surgical volunteerism

Education Subcommittee

• Oversight of ACS H.O.P.E. Clinical Congress sessions (e.g., Global Health Competencies for Surgeons)
• Development of a longitudinal global surgery course
• Scholarship program design and application review for global surgery learners

International Subcommittee

• Supporting ACS H.O.P.E. Surgical Training Collaboratives in Ethiopia, Zambia, and Rwanda
• Coordinating the ACS-COSECSA Women Scholars Award
• Developing virtual education programs for cross-site collaboration and access
