Franklin H. and Isabelle H. Martin Papers

Franklin H. Martin was the great visionary and chief founder of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). His papers are of great interest to those interested in the history of the College. Martin’s autobiography, The Joy of Living (Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Doran, 1933), is essentially the history of the founding of the ACS. The Papers, through records of his early career, his association with late 19th century Chicago medical schools and hospitals, his involvement in World War I, and his correspondence, also document and reflect the life of a late 19th- and early 20th-century surgeon.
